Community Partnership Project

Working in partnership with the District Attorney's Juvenile Diversion Program, The Open Door offers at-risk youth a free, six-week program of counseling and community service.

Counseling

Licensed counselors will facilitate adventure-based counseling groups on Tuesdays in The Open Door dining room from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. One counseling session will take place at a rock-climbing wall.

The counseling includes experiential activities and initiatives, personal journal writing, and self-reflection in a comfortable peer environment.

The group will conclude with a Saturday trip to a ropes course. At least one parent (or legal guardian) must participate in the ropes course, which provides an opportunity for family relationship building through experiential activities.

Community Service

The community-service component includes training on basic employment skills and food prep and service skills.

Participants will perform their community-service obligation at The Open Door on Thursdays from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Participants will prepare, serve, and clean up after the evening meal, which is offered free to community members in need.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

At-risk youth aged 13 through 18 who have a court or school referral are invited to apply for admission to the Community Partnership Project. An intake interview is required.

WHAT IS REQUIRED?

Responsible attendance and full cooperation are a must. Participants are required to attend all six counseling sessions and to participate fully in the community service and job training at The Open Door. At least one parent or guardian must participate in the ropes course.

WHAT DO YOU GAIN?

  • Effective counseling at no cost other than your commitment.
